NEWTON, MA — The Newton Free Library has announced a community program focused on solar energy and home energy efficiency later this month.

The program is scheduled for Monday, July 20, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Druker Auditorium at the Newton Free Library on 330 Homer St. Presented in partnership with the city's Sustainability Team and Green Newton, the event will feature free ice cream while residents learn about solar power, energy efficiency, and ways to reduce household energy costs.

The city's Climate Action Coordinator is scheduled to discuss Newton's municipal solar initiatives and the role renewable energy plays in achieving the goals of the city's Climate Action Plan. Green Newton's Energy Advocate will also provide information about home insulation, energy efficiency, and Mass Save programs available to help residents improve comfort while reducing energy costs.

Local solar professionals will lead a presentation that shares examples of residential solar installations and explains community solar options for renters and homeowners whose properties may not be suitable for rooftop solar panels. Organizers will also provide information about local resources available to help residents explore clean energy projects.

Community solar programs allow residents to subscribe to shared solar projects and receive credits on their electric bills without installing panels on their own property, making solar energy accessible to renters and homeowners with unsuitable roofs.
