North Andover Police Stop 35 Drivers In Crosswalk School Safety Sting

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — North Andover police stopped 35 vehicles for crosswalk violations during traffic enforcement operations over two days this week in advance of the start of the new school year.

Police said that during Monday's enforcement detail, officers stopped 19 vehicles for violations involving pedestrians in crosswalks. On Wednesday, officers stopped another 16 vehicles.

Police said drivers received either a warning or a citation, depending on the circumstances.

Police said the effort comes as students, families, faculty and staff prepare to return to school. The department said motorists should remain alert, slow down, and be prepared to stop for pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks.

The enforcement was aimed at reminding drivers of the risks tied to failing to yield, police said.

Operators who were stopped were advised about the severity of crosswalk violations and the potential dangers that can result when drivers do not yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, according to the department.

The North Andover Police Department said the enforcement campaign will continue over the next several weeks.
