Peabody Keeps Water Restrictions As MA Lowers Drought Level

PEABODY, MA — Peabody residents must continue following Phase III water restrictions even after Massachusetts revised the Northeast Region, including Peabody and nearby communities, to a Level 2 "Critical Drought."

The city said last week that local rules remain in place because reservoir levels in Peabody are still at critical levels.

The state's drought status has improved, but Peabody is not easing its own limits. Hand watering by pail or watering can is still allowed under the city's Phase III restrictions.

Maximum conservation efforts are strongly recommended to help maintain water supply.

Under the current state and city drought restrictions, several types of outdoor water use remain prohibited in Peabody. Residents may not use sprinkler systems, water lawns or wash cars outdoors.

No timetable for lifting the restrictions was provided, and residents subject to fines for violations.
