Salem, Peabody Public Schools Awarded State Literacy Grants

SALEM, MA — Salem and Peabody Public Schools are set to receive state literacy grant funding as part of nearly $24.7 million awarded across Massachusetts, according to the Healey-Driscoll Administration.

The administration said 71 school districts and one educational collaborative received awards through four Partnership for Reading Success–Massachusetts, or PRISM, grant programs.

In the local awards announced, Peabody Public Schools will receive $822,200 through the PRISM I continuation grant program, while Salem Public Schools will receive $676,375 through that same program.

Salem Public Schools also will receive $176,130 through the PRISM III second cohort grant program.

The grants are intended to strengthen literacy instruction and improve reading outcomes for students across Massachusetts.

The state said districts will use the funding to implement high-quality instructional materials, expand professional learning for educators and strengthen evidence-based literacy instruction from pre-kindergarten through grade 12.

"Reading is the foundation for everything students do in school and throughout their lives," said Gov. Maura Healey. "That's why we're making historic investments to strengthen literacy instruction, support educators and help every student build the skills they need to succeed."

Education Secretary Steve Zrike said the work is meant to support long-term improvements.

"Improving literacy outcomes takes more than a one-time investment — it requires sustained commitment to high-quality instruction," said Zrike. "By helping districts strengthen curriculum, build educator capacity, and support effective implementation, these grants will create lasting improvements for students across the Commonwealth."
