'Cherished Educator': Shrewsbury Community Mourns Beloved Teacher

SHREWSBURY, MA — The Shrewsbury community is mourning the loss of a beloved elementary school teacher who spent years inspiring students in the district.

Marci Jill Rubin, who taught in Shrewsbury Public Schools for more than 15 years, died on July 30 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 54, according to her obituary.

Rubin was a devoted elementary school teacher for more than 25 years, most recently in Shrewsbury, where she primarily taught second grade beginning in 2010.

"Marci Rubin was a cherished educator and colleague who touched the lives of so many children and families during her years at both Coolidge School and Major Howard Beal School," Shrewsbury Public Schools said in a statement to Patch.

The district said Rubin was known for her energy, deep commitment to her students and the lasting impact she had on those around her.

"Marci had a remarkable ability to bring light, joy, and enthusiasm into the lives of her students and colleagues," the district said. "Our thoughts are with her family, children, colleagues, students, and loved ones during this unimaginable time. We are holding our school community close and supporting one another as we grieve the loss of someone who gave so much to Shrewsbury."

Services were held Monday in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, Rubin's family asks that donations be made in her memory to IPAW Rescue or Penn State THON, a student-run philanthropy that supports the fight against pediatric cancer.
