Shrewsbury To Add 10 Firefighter-Paramedics For Inaugural Municipal EMS Team
The town is preparing to launch its first municipal ambulance service.
SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury is recruiting firefighter-paramedics as the town prepares to launch its first municipal ambulance service.
The town expects to add 10 positions in 2026 to establish a town-owned, fire-based emergency medical service. The positions have a salary range of $76,535.80 to $86,353.04, plus a paramedic stipend, depending on experience, according to the town’s job posting. The posting opened Aug. 28 and will remain open until the positions are filled.
Previous firefighter-paramedic experience, Massachusetts EMT-Paramedic certification and graduation from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy are highly preferred. EMT-Basics who are enrolled in paramedic school will also be considered.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and a valid Massachusetts driver’s license. New hires must live within 25 miles of Shrewsbury, measured border to border, within nine months of their appointment.
Candidates must also pass a background investigation, medical examination, psychological evaluation and post-offer physical ability test. State law prohibits people who smoke tobacco products from being appointed as municipal firefighters.

The department operates from three fire stations and currently has 32 career firefighters, eight lieutenants, four captains, an EMS coordinator, a deputy chief and Fire Chief Seth Colby.
The town’s fiscal 2027 budget plan included $762,637 for the initial months of the new EMS program, including about $620,900 for salaries. The plan said Town Meeting approved the purchase of an ambulance during the fall 2025 Special Town Meeting, according to the Finance Committee’s May report.
New hires will work a 24-hour schedule consisting of one day on, one day off, one day on and five days off. Benefits include health insurance, 12 paid holidays, paid time off, Group 4 retirement benefits and education and EMT incentives worth up to 30 percent of base salary, according to the job posting.
