Developer Walks Away From 26-Story Davis Square Apartment Tower: Report

SOMERVILLE, MA — A controversial proposal to build a 26-story apartment tower with more than 500 units in Davis Square is no longer moving forward after the developer walked away from the project, according to a report from Boston.com.

Copper Mill announced Monday that it was ending its agreement with the property owners after years of work on plans to redevelop the corner of Elm and Grove streets. The project called for 502 apartments, including approximately 125 affordable units, along with roughly 10 ground-floor commercial spaces.

Copper Mill owner Andrew Flynn blamed the decision on what he described as a lack of action from the city. Mayor Jake Wilson disputed that characterization, saying that the city never received a formal proposal because the development was being pursued through the state's Chapter 40B process. The project's application has been paused at the state level since December.

The proposal had drawn attention from residents over its size and potential impact on Davis Square. It would have also included new locations for The Burren and Dragon Pizza, which Wilson said have since had their leases extended and will be able to remain.
