'Which Side?' Protest Music Teach-Out Returns to Somerville’s Burren Backroom on Oct. 27

A monthly series blending live music performance, historical commentary, and community dialogue is returning for its second year in Somerville. Which Side?: A Protest Music Teach-Out takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, at The Burren Backroom.

Produced by Joyce Linehan, Jon Lupfer, and James Sullivan, the 90-minute program offers a platform for artists and audiences to reflect on social justice through music. The series draws inspiration from Sullivan’s book, Which Side Are You On?: 20th Century American History in 100 Protest Songs.
“Music has always been a powerful tool for change,” said co-producer James Sullivan. “We’re excited to continue this journey of storytelling and solidarity.”

This month’s lineup features performances from:

• Angelica Munoz
• Didi Stewart
• Ann Koplow (The Singing Therapist)
• Mike Verge
• Sweet Petunia
• Juliana Hatfield

Each musical act will perform alongside the Which Side house band, The Paid Protesters, connecting historical protest music to modern movements for social change.

“This event is a celebration of diverse voices and shared stories,” co-producer Joyce Linehan said. “Through music, we create a space for understanding and connection, encouraging our community to engage with important social issues.”Event Details1
