Somerville To Celebrate Brazilian Independence With Annual Flag Raising

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city is preparing to celebrate the history and culture of its Brazilian community with an annual ceremony at City Hall.

The Somerville Office of Immigrant Affairs’ fourth annual Brazilian flag-raising ceremony is slated to begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, on the Somerville City Hall concourse at 93 Highland Ave. The ceremony is being held in partnership with the Brazilian Women’s Group and will celebrate 204 years of Brazilian independence. A rain date is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14.

Mayor Jake Wilson, representatives from the Consulate General of Brazil in Boston, the Brazilian Women’s Group, and Office of Immigrant Affairs staff will deliver remarks during the event. Live music and performances of the national anthems of Brazil and the United States will also be part of the festivities before the ceremonial raising of the Brazilian flag.

“Somerville’s Brazilian community has helped shape our city through its culture, leadership, local businesses, and deep commitment to community,” Wilson said. “I’m proud to join the Brazilian Women’s Group and neighbors from across Somerville in celebrating Brazil’s independence and recognizing the many contributions of our Brazilian community.”

Light refreshments will be available during the ceremony, along with resources from local Brazilian organizations. The event will also include pão de queijo, or baked cheese rolls, and brigadeiro, a Brazilian chocolate sweet.

“We are so grateful that in Somerville, the chosen home of so many Brazilians, we are able to celebrate our Brazilian roots, history, and culture,” Portuguese Services Coordinator Rafael Peruzzo said. “We look forward to sharing some delicious ‘pão de queijo’ (baked cheese rolls) and ‘brigadeiro’ (chocolate sweet), staples of Brazilian cuisine.”
