Sudbury Bike Safety 'Roadeo' Returns This Month

SUDBURY, MA — Sudbury parents can now sign up their children for the 2026 Sudbury Bike Safety Roadeo, a free hands-on bicycle safety event designed for fifth-grade-age kids.

The event will take place on Sunday, May 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Curtis Middle School.

Presented in collaboration with the Sudbury Police Department, Sudbury Public Schools and MassBike, the outdoor program will teach important bicycle safety and riding skills to pre-registered participants who are capable riders but have not received formal bike safety training.

Certified and insured MassBike instructors will lead the approximately three-hour session through demonstrations, lectures, riding drills and a fun obstacle course. Participants will also learn basic bicycle maintenance and safe riding practices.

Children who complete the Roadeo will receive a free backpack with safety gear and a certificate of completion.

Organizers say the program is designed to help young riders safely navigate increasingly busy roads and sidewalks amid growing traffic, distracted driving and more people traveling by bike and scooter.

“Our goal: Avoid injuries by knowing your bike, knowing how to operate your bike safely, and knowing the importance of always being aware and focused to ride safely,” organizers said.

Participation is limited to 40 riders. Children must be of fifth-grade age and able to ride independently.

Registration forms are available here. Completed, parent-signed forms should be emailed to SPDcurtisroadeo@sudbury.ma.us. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Organizers are also seeking approximately 15 adult or “junior adult” volunteers to assist with the event from noon to 4:30 p.m. on May 31. Those interested in volunteering can email curtisroadeo@AOL.com.
