Sudbury Playground, Restroom Upgrades Delayed Until Fall

SUDBURY, MA — Planned improvements at Smile Playground and the Haskell Field restrooms will take longer than initially expected.

The projects have been delayed because of material availability and are now expected to be completed in fall 2026, the town announced on Monday. The playground and restrooms will remain closed during construction.

The work was originally expected to begin in late July or early August and take three to four weeks. The town plans to complete both projects simultaneously to limit disruption to playground visitors, youth sports programs, community events and Sudbury Summer Camp operations.

The improvements are funded through two Community Preservation Act projects for fiscal 2027 approved at the 2026 Annual Town Meeting.

Plans for Dr. Bill Adelson Smile Playground include a merry-go-round, saddle spinner, rocker seat, farmers market panels, sensory dome and tunnel and Vibra Chimes. A new poured-in-place surface will also be installed to improve accessibility and safety.

All new playground equipment and features will be ADA universal and suitable for all ages, according to the town.

The Haskell Field restroom project will include a full interior renovation down to the studs, commercial-grade plumbing fixtures, epoxy flooring, a ventilation fan and accessibility and safety improvements.

The work is also expected to improve the facilities’ durability and cleanliness and allow the restrooms to open earlier in the spring and remain open later in the fall.

The final schedule remains subject to equipment deliveries, contractor availability and unforeseen circumstances.
