Sudbury Sets Timeline For Smile Playground, Restroom Upgrades

SUDBURY, MA — Renovations at Smile Playground and the Haskell Field restrooms are scheduled to begin later this month after material shortages delayed the projects.

The Haskell Field restrooms will close Monday for repairs and refurbishment, while playground installation is expected to begin between Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, the town announced on Wednesday. The playground will remain closed throughout the three- to four-week project.

The improvements were initially scheduled to begin in late July or early August but were postponed because of material availability.

Smile Playground will receive new equipment, sensory and interactive play features and a poured-in-place surface intended to improve accessibility and safety. The equipment will include a merry-go-round, saddle spinner, rocker seat, farmers market panels, sensory dome and tunnel and Vibra Chimes.

The restroom building will undergo a full interior renovation with new commercial-grade plumbing fixtures, epoxy flooring, ventilation and accessibility and safety improvements. Town officials said the work is also expected to allow the restrooms to open earlier in the spring and remain open later in the fall.

Both projects were approved as Community Preservation Act projects at the 2026 Annual Town Meeting. The schedule remains subject to equipment delivery, contractor availability and unforeseen circumstances, according to the town.
