Swampscott Provides Trash, Recycling Updates Amid Cart Waitlist

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Swampscott is continuing its transition to automated trash and recycling collection and has issued new guidance for residents waiting on smaller recycling carts, dealing with old bins and arranging bulk item pickup.

The town said residents who already had asked for 65-gallon recycling carts do not need to submit another request. Those requests remain on file while the town waits for an updated delivery timeline from its vendor for additional carts.

Until those carts arrive, residents should keep using the town-issued 95-gallon blue recycling cart for regular collection.

"We know many residents are waiting for their requested 65-gallon recycling carts," officials said. "The town is currently waiting for an updated delivery timeline from our vendor for the additional carts.

"We will provide an update as soon as we receive additional information from our vendor."

Swampscott also updated residents on the one-time curbside collection of old, unused recycling carts.

The town said that collection has been taking place this week. Residents whose old recycling carts were not picked up are asked to email trash@swampscottma.gov so the town can document the missed collection and provide further assistance.

Residents can also bring old recycling carts to a Saturday drop-off event on Aug. 29 at the Department of Public Works lot.

The town said residents with carts still in good condition are especially encouraged to use that option so the carts may be reused rather than thrown away.

On bulk item disposal, the town said collection must now be scheduled and paid for directly through Republic Services. Bulk item stickers are no longer available for purchase at Town Hall. Residents who need to get rid of a bulk item should contact Republic Services at 781-289-0500 to schedule pickup and arrange payment.

The town also asked residents not to place bulk items at the curb unless a pickup has already been scheduled.
