Swampscott Town Hall To Host 'Field Of Heroes' Memorial Day Tribute

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — A Memorial Day weekend tribute honoring Massachusetts service members who died in military service is set for display in front of Swampscott Town Hall.

The Swampscott-based Military Friends Foundation's "Field of Heroes" tribute will be on display beginning Friday and will remain available for public viewing throughout Memorial Day weekend.

The display will feature banners with photos and stories of Massachusetts service members who have lost their lives in military service since Sept. 11, 2001.

The tribute will also honor the more than 37,000 Massachusetts service members who have given their lives since the Revolutionary War.

At 5 p.m. Friday, local community members, including police, fire and scouts, will help set up the display. Community members are invivted to take part in preparing the tribute.

"Memorial Day is a sacred time to pause and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in defense of our nation," said Sarah Sweeney, Executive Director of Military Friends Foundation and Army wife. "The Field of Heroes is a powerful reminder that behind every name and every photograph is a family, a story and a legacy of service that must never be forgotten.

"We are proud to stand with the Town of Swampscott to honor Massachusetts’ fallen heroes and ensure their sacrifice is remembered by the communities they served."

The Gold Star Families Bridge in Lynn will also be among five bridges illuminated in gold this weekend to honor those who gave their lives serving their country as part of Operation Gold Star.

The other bridges illuminated are the Zakim Bridge in Boston, Longfellow Bridge in Boston, Fore River Bridge in Quincy and the Burns Bridge in Worcester.

Military Friends Foundation was established after 9/11 to support Massachusetts military families and families of the fallen, according to the organization. The foundation is organizing the Swampscott display as part of its broader mission to support those families and recognize military sacrifice.

The public will be able to view the memorial throughout the holiday weekend in front of Town Hall.
