Leading Toy Company Celebrates 100 Years In Wakefield

WAKEFIELD, MA — A local company making balsa-wood model airplanes and aviation toys is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Guillow's was founded in 1926.

"Our mission is to inspire generations of aviators, hobbyists, and families through hands-on model kits that celebrate the magic of flight," according to the company's website. "From our early days making simple gliders to our innovative model kits, Guillow’s continues to honor its legacy in the aviation toy industry."

The company was founded by Paul K. Guillow, a veteran World War I aviator for the Navy. It was originally called Nu Craft Toys.

The company moved to its present-day location at 40 New Salem St. in Wakefield in 1933.

Since then, it has introduced various models from World War-II planes to the F-15 Eagle.

Current CEO Tom Barker grew up in Wakefield and began working there 51 years ago while he was still in high school, according to WBUR.org.

He said not much has changed over time with the company as they've kept things "old school." The humble glider model remains a fan favorite.
