Community Training on Domestic Abuse & Coercive Control

Event Details

Wayland Council On Aging, 8 Andrew Ave, Wayland, MA, 01778

Training about domestic violence and coercive control following changes in the 209A law.  Dr. Ellerman, domestic abuse expert and researcher, will share critical information for survivors, town/community leaders and allies.

In 2024, Massachusetts made a historic shift by expanding the Chapter 209A legal definition of domestic abuse to include coercive control, a pattern of behavior intended to harass, intimidate, and coerce compliance. This training is designed to raise awareness and equip the public with tools to identify and describe subtle patterns of abuse and control.

You will learn how to: 1) identify a wide range of abusive and controlling behaviors that change over time 2) understand how children are directly targeted and affected by coercive control 3) see through the ways that abusers disguise and normalize their abuse 4) learn how survivors can use the 209A law to obtain legal protection 5) understand the challenges of post-separation abuse.

Helpful for community members navigating controlling or abusive relationships, their friends, family, allies, and local leaders.
