Delays Expected Ahead Of Overnight Road Closures In Westborough

WESTBOROUGH, MA —Flanders Road from Washington Street to Connector Road will be closed overnight for three days beginning Wednesday, Jan. 21. The closure is meant for crews to demolish a section of the I-495 Northbound bridge over Flanders Road.

The closures are part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project, which will help alleviate traffic demands exceeding its capacity, according to MassDOT. The project will replace the interchange, eliminate the old tooth booth and weaving areas, and improve ramp spacing, acceleration, and deceleration lanes.

The project will also add an auxiliary lane from I-495 Northbound to Route 9 and multiple new bridges on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 Northbound over Flanders Road, and on Fruit Street.

Here's when Flanders Road will be closed next week:

• Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. to Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6 a.m.
• Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. to Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 a.m.
• Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. to Saturday, Jan. 24, at 6 a.m.

There will also be several detour routes in place during those times. MassDOT said there will be signage and law enforcement to guide drivers through the work area.

• From Flanders Road, turn onto East Main Street (Route 30)
• Turn left toward Route 9 East toward Boston - Worcester Turnpike/Turnpike Road
• Turn right onto Route 9 East toward Boston - Worcester Turnpike/Turnpike Road and continue for two miles
• Turn right onto Coslin Drive
• Turn right onto Washington Street
• Turn left onto Flanders Road

Here is the detour route for those looking to travel west of I-495 on Flanders Road, according to MassDOT:

• From Flanders Road, turn right onto Washington Street
• Turn left onto Coslin Drive
• Turn right onto Route 9 East – Worcester Turnpike/Turnpike Road
• Make a U-turn at Crystal Pond Road
• Take the exit toward Research Drive/Via Connector Road
• Turn left onto Computer Drive
• Computer Drive turns slightly left and becomes Connector Road
• Continue onto Flanders Road

This comes just one month after MassDOT announced that a new traffic pattern will be implemented on I-495 northbound between Exits 58 (I-90) and 59 (Route 9). The new traffic pattern will remain in place through Spring 2026.
