Back-to-School Open House Invites Families to Build, Create and Compete at Guild Hall Learning

As summer winds down and a new school year approaches, Guild Hall Learning is opening its doors to families looking for something more than another after-school activity.

The Guild Hall Learning Hub & Makerspace will host special Back-to-School Open Houses in Woburn and Cambridge, giving kids ages 8–17 and their families an opportunity to explore the space, meet the community, and experience hands-on STEM and creative learning.

This isn't an open house where kids simply walk around and look at displays. They get to build, experiment, compete, and play.

Families can jump into a variety of activities throughout the event, including fast-paced engineering challenges where participants put their problem-solving skills to the test. One of the featured challenges will be a crowd favorite: build a catapult and try to destroy a castle.

It's a simple challenge with a serious engineering lesson behind it. Participants have to think about construction, stability, angles, force, and design—and then find out what happens when they put their creation to the test.

See What Young Makers Are Building

The Open House will also give families a chance to explore projects created by Guild Hall students. From engineering and robotics to technology and creative projects, visitors will see both works in progress and completed creations.

Students will have an opportunity to showcase their work and talk about what they've created, giving prospective students a chance to see what is possible when they have access to the tools, technology, and mentorship to pursue their own ideas.

And visitors won't just be watching.

Families will be able to get hands-on with real tools, technology, and mini-projects, providing a quick introduction to the kind of learning that takes place at Guild Hall.

More Than STEM

While engineering and technology are a big part of the Guild Hall experience, the Open House will also highlight the broader creative community.

The Guild Hall Play Zone will feature VR, classic arcade games, and other gaming experiences, giving visitors another way to explore the space.

The goal is to demonstrate that learning doesn't always look like sitting at a desk or following a worksheet.

Sometimes it looks like building a robot.

Sometimes it means figuring out why your catapult didn't work.

Sometimes it's designing a game, creating something that has never existed before, or working with another student to solve a problem.

That's the Guild Hall approach: give students the opportunity to make, experiment, fail, rethink, and try again.

Come Meet the Guild

The Open House is also an opportunity for families to meet the people behind Guild Hall Learning—including students, mentors, and educators—and learn more about programs available during the school year.

Whether a child is already passionate about robotics and engineering or simply likes to take things apart and figure out how they work, the event is designed to give families a feel for the Guild Hall community.

No prior makerspace experience is required. Just come curious.
