Woburn Lands $261K For Major Middle School Curriculum Update

WOBURN, MA — Woburn Public Schools has received a $261,000 state grant to overhaul its English language arts curriculum for middle school students over the next four years, district officials announced.

The Partnership for Reading Success-Massachusetts III grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will support new instructional materials for students in grades 6 through 8 at Joyce and Kennedy middle schools.

During the 2026-27 school year, the district will review curriculum programs, provide professional development and purchase materials. The new curriculum is scheduled to be implemented in 2027-28 with coaching provided through the state program.

Woburn will establish a team of middle school ELA teachers, special education educators, multilingual specialists, principals and district leaders to evaluate state-approved curriculum options and select materials that align with student needs.

The final two years of the grant period, through 2030, will focus on continued coaching and monitoring the curriculum's implementation.

“Selecting a new ELA curriculum is an important decision that requires thoughtful consideration and collaboration from our educators and district leaders,” Superintendent Matthew Crowley said in a statement. “This grant allows us to invest in high-quality materials, while ensuring that our teachers have the training and support necessary to successfully implement them.”
