MI Gas Prices Nearing $5 Per Gallon, Record High Diesel Prices: AAA

Some Michigan drivers paid $5 for a gallon of regular gas Thursday morning.

The average price for a regular gallon of gas across the state was $4.75, up 20 cents overnight and nearly 50 cents from last week, according to AAA.

Some drivers in the Grand Rapids area paid $5.01 for a regular gallon of gas Thursday morning, according to a WOODTV report.

Diesel prices are also surging across the state, now sitting at a record high $6.54 per gallon, according to AAA.

In the metro Detroit area, drivers paid an average of $4.72 for a regular gallon of gas, also up 20 cents from yesterday, according to AAA.

Michigan's record high for gas is $5.22, which was set in June 2022 about four months after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The spike in gas prices comes as the U.S.-Iran conflict in the Middle East pushed oil prices past $100 a barrel Wednesday.

The price increase is also due to a power outage at an oil refinery near Chicago. The refinery is a key supplier for the Midwest and produces about 11 million gallons of gas and diesel fuel a day, according to a CBS News report.
