James Wins GOP Primary, Will Face Benson For Governor: AP

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and U.S. Rep. John James won their respective party's nominations for governor Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press.

Benson cruised to the Democratic nomination, securing 84 percent of the vote over Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson when the AP called the race.

James, on the other hand, defeated businessman and fellow Republican Perry Johnson by capturing more than 50 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.

Benson centered her campaign on cutting essential costs for families, such as health care, prescription drugs and housing, while James largely positioned himself as a candidate to cut taxes.

James has signaled that eliminating government waste would eventually reduce the state’s reliance on income tax revenue. He has also talked about delivering stronger economic growth and fewer regulations.

Meanwhile, Benson has cited housing as one of the most enduring challenges that Michigan faces and has put together a plan to help create opportunities for first-time homeowners.

Michiganders will determine the state's next governor in November's general elections.

Benson thanked voters Tuesday night in an Instagram post, saying, "I’m so proud to be your Democratic nominee for Governor of Michigan. I’m ready to fight for your future — costs down, wages up, rights protected, and a government that works for all of us."

James also thanked voters, posting, "Because of YOU, we’re one step closer to bringing common sense back to our state."
