5 Detroit Area Breweries To Celebrate American Craft Beer Week

If you enjoy slipping down to the Motor City Brewing Works or the Royal Oak Brewery in the Detroit area for a craft beer, know that you’re contributing to what has become the industry’s multi-million economic impact in Michigan.

There’s no better time to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of these establishments than during American Craft Beer Week, May 7-11.

In Michigan, there were 420 breweries in 2024, ranking No. 9 nationally but placing No. 14 for breweries per capita at 5.6 per 100,000 adults, according to the Brewers Association, which represents the nation’s more than 9,000 breweries.

The industry generated an economic impact of about $1.8 million, or $242 per capita. Brewers in the state produced 287,842 barrels of craft beer annually, with production equating to 1.2 gallons per adult — placing it among the lowest in the nation.

Breweries in the Detroit area include:

• Motor City Brewing Works, 470 West Canfield Street, Detroit. One of Detroit’s landmark breweries, as it's well known for its pizzas and beers. motorcitybeer.com/

• The Royal Oak Brewery, 215 E. 4th Street. Located in downtown Royal Oak, the brewery is the oldest in Oakland County and known for Kölsching Hour, when it serves crisp and clean kölsch in traditional glasses on the Biergarten patio. royaloakbrewery.com/
• Griffin Claw Brewing Company, 575 S Eton St, Birmingham. The beer hall is known for its craft beers and pub classics such as fish and chips, burgers, and spicy fried chicken sandwiches. There is also a Rochester Hills location. griffinclawbrewingcompany.com/
• Copper Hop Brewing, 23401 Greater Mack Ave, St Clair Shores. The menu features a wide selection of beers, ciders and wines. Food trucks post up on a weekly rotation, as well as live music performances. thecopperhop.com/

The U.S. craft beer industry saw a “year of correction” in 2025, with production falling about 5.1 percent to roughly 21.9 million barrels as brewers faced softer demand and a challenging market, according to the Brewers Association’s 2025 annual report.

The number of breweries also declined, and most segments posted losses, though craft beer still outperformed the overall beer market and slightly increased its market share. Despite the downturn, the report pointed to early signs of stabilization, including fewer closures and continued resilience among some brewers, suggesting the industry may be nearing a more sustainable “new normal.”
