McKinney Leads Thanedar For MI's 13th Congressional District: AP

State Rep. Donavan McKinney was leading U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in Michigan's Democratic Primary for the state's 13th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

At 11:56 p.m. Tuesday night, McKinney, a two-time state lawmaker from Detroit, was ahead by nearly 4,000 votes with roughly 41 percent of the totatl vote counted, according to unofficial results.

The district serves Detroit, Grosse Pointe and multiple downriver communities.

Republican Taras Nykoriak is running unopposed and will face the Democratic primary winner in November.

Precincts reporting - 41 percent

Thanedar serves as the ranking member of the House Committee on Homeland Security's Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability.

He has cited his top priorities as lowering costs, protecting voting rights and the fight for cleaner water and stronger infrastructure.

House Democratic Leaders Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete all endorsed Thanedar.

He was first elected to Congress in 2022, when he defeated Martell Bivings for the seat in 2022. That became the first time a district covering most of Detroit was without Black representation in Congress since 1955.

Detroit Dems Again Looking To Unseat One Of Their Own In Congress

Thanedar went on to win re-election in 2024, again defeating Bivings . But now some analysts believe Tuesday's primary may be his toughest test.

McKinney has positioned himself as a progressive alternative to Thanedar. He has focused on voting rights, campaign finance and assistance for working families. He was also endorsed by Pennsylvania's U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, who is seen as a prominent progressive.
