Uber Driver Killed In Oakland County Drunk Driving Crash: Police

OAK PARK, MI — A man was killed and another man was injured in a Thursday night crash in Oakland County, according to police.

The crash happened at 11 p.m. at the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway in Oak Park, according to police.

Officers arrived and found a black Dodge Charger facing east on Eight Mile Road with heavy front-end damage, according to police.

They also found a heavily damaged Buick Envision, which had crossed over the median and was facing west on Eight Mile Road, according to police.

Officials had to extricate the driver of the Envision. He was taken to a nearby hsopital where he died, according to police.

Police did not identify the man, but said he was working as an Uber driver.

A backseat passenger was ejected from the Envision. Police said the 23-year-old man was lying on the ground, but conscious and alert. He was also taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.

The driver of the Dodge Charger, a 19-year-old man, sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to police.

A passenger in the Charger, an 18-year-old girl, was not injured in the crash, according to police.

Investigators believe the Envision was moving north on Coolidge Highway when the Charger, which was moving east on Eight Mile Road, slammed into the SUV.

Investigators said the driver of the Charger sped through a red light at the intersection and caused the crash.

Officials believe the driver of the Charger was driving drunk at the time of the crash. The 19-year-old man was arrested and police are asking prosecutors for charges.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic crash," Oak Park Director of the Department of Public Safety Steve Cooper said. "We urge drivers to slow down, never drive under the influence, eliminate distractions, buckle up, and remain attentive to pedestrians and others sharing the roadway. Safe driving requires constant focus and responsible decision-making. A few simple choices can save lives and help keep our community safe."

Police did not release any names. They are still investigating the crash.
