📰 News we're reading

1. Mott Foundation investing $30M into public safety (wnem.com) — Flint is set to see up to $30 million invested in public safety over the next decade, with most of it supporting local law enforcement and community policing. The Mott Foundation's new plan, announced after a fatal downtown shooting near its building, also funds youth and neighborhood programs aimed at reducing violence and strengthening resident engagement.

2. Flint block party hands out 300 backpacks for back-to-school (abc12.com) — Families in Flint can head to Riverside West Park today, where Men Motivating Men Worldwide is giving away 300 free backpacks packed with school supplies, plus meals, to kids in a low-income neighborhood. Organizers say bringing resources directly into the community helps families who can't easily reach downtown events, and this long-running effort joins their other kid-focused traditions like an Easter egg hunt and trunk-or-treat with coat giveaways.

3. Pets of the week: Axel is a handsome potato. Lily is a sophisticated feline. (mlive.com) — Genesee County Animal Care in Flint Township is spotlighting Axel, a shy but charming 3- to 4-year-old dog, and Lily, a sweet, fully vetted cat, both eager for calm, loving homes. With low adoption fees, walk-in hours, and no advance application required, Flint-area families can easily stop by Pasadena Avenue to meet them and other available pets.

4. Claressa Shields makes dominant return to middleweight after stopping Kaye Scott (thegrio.com) — Flint native Claressa Shields just reclaimed the WBA and WBC middleweight boxing titles with a dominant sixth-round stoppage of Kaye Scott in Atlanta, reinforcing her status as one of the sport's all-time greats. The two-time Olympic gold medalist now holds world titles in five weight classes and is eyeing more unification bouts at middleweight against top contenders.
