Detroit-Area School Dean, Husband, Son Charged After Guns Found In Car On Campus: Sheriff

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — A student and his parents are facing charges after the teen brought guns to his Detroit-area school, according to sheriff's officials.

The incident happened last October when officials were told the student had guns inside his car, which was parked outside Merritt Academy charter school on Havenridge Road in the village of New Haven, officials said.

The investigation began after officials said they learned the teen made "concerning statements" to classmates.

The students then told the student's mother, Kendra Kneer, who at the time was the school's dean of students, officials said.

Kneer kept her son in her office that day while she checked his vehicle for guns, officials said.

The teen's father then reached out to a family friend, who removed the guns from the student’s vehicle, officials said.

Once other staff members learned of the incident, they contacted the sheriff's office.

The teen was charged with two counts of possessing a weapon in a weapon-free school zone, each a 93-day misdemeanor.

Kneer was charged with two counts of possessing a weapon in a weapon-free school zone and a count of violating the state's safe storage law, also a 93-day misdemeanor.

The teen's father was charged with two counts of violating the state's safe storage law, a 93-day misdemeanor.

The parents were placed in jail with a $500 bond, officials said.
