Grab Your Cleats and Shin Guards, Northville High Boys Soccer Tryouts Kick Off the Season

As soccer season quickly approaches, the Northville High School boys soccer program has scheduled tryouts to take place at Millennium Park and the high school from Aug. 13 to 16.

From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Varsity Head Coach Henry Klimes expects to find between 100 and 125 players in attendance.  From this pool of players, 18 to 20 will be chosen for Varsity, 18 to 20 will be selected for JV, and 15 to 18 players will make up the freshman team.

Depending on the players’ talent levels, changes are made to the tryouts each year to test the players' overall soccer awareness.

“We will test physical abilities of speed endurance and agility, as well as include ladders, stick courses, sprints, long distance runs, and specific soccer skills, such as dribbling, shooting, trapping, game defending, and attacking,” Klimes said.

After tryouts on Friday, the tryout numbers of the boys who made the team will get announced.

“It’s a tough day for me.  I wish I could keep everyone, but I just can’t,” said Klimes, who has been the NHS Varsity Boys Soccer coach since 1990.

Klimes will be working with assistant coaches Andy Cosenza, Mike Presley, and James Hannah this year, beginning with preseason games on Aug. 21.  Varsity will play three away games, including Rochester at 4 p.m., Stoney Creek at 5:30 p.m., and Rochester Adams at 7 p.m.

The regular season for NHS will begin on Aug 24. with three away games at the Portage Tournament.  Opponents have yet to be determined.
