2 Boys Rescued From Upstairs Window During Oakland County House Fire: Sheriff

The boys were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation and released, officials said.

ORION TOWNSHIP, MI — Two children were rescued from the upper level of a burning home in Orion Township last week, according to sheriff's officials.

Officials were called at 4:52 p.m. last Friday to a burning home in the 2900 block of Meadowbrook Court in Orion Township, officials said.

They arrived and immediately saw two children who were trapped on the second floor of the burning home and unable to escape, officials said.

A deputy acted quickly and placed a nearby trash container under the window to gain the additional height needed to safely reach the children as the room filled with smoke, officials said.

Using the improvised platform, the deputy grabbed the boys and pulled them through the window, and was able to safely lower them to the ground, officials said.

The boys, ages 12 and 10, were taken to Trinity Health Hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation and released, officials said.

Firefighters were able to get inside the home and extinguish the blaze, rescuing the family dog in the process, officials said.

No other injuries were reported.

Officials were still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

"This incident could have had a far different outcome," Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard said. "Deputy Musse immediately recognized that every second mattered. His ability to rapidly assess the situation, improvise with the tools available and act without hesitation allowed these two young boys to escape what could have become a tragic situation. His actions exemplify the courage, professionalism and commitment our deputies demonstrate every day."
