Metro Detroit Man Dies After Being Struck By Lightning Near Disney World In FL: Reports

A metro Detroit man died after he was struck by lightning in Florida on Tuesday, according to news reports.

Officials identified the man as 20-year-old Matthew Jenkins, of Shelby Township.

They said he collapsed along a path behind a hotel at 700 Bloom Street in Osceola County, Florida, after a lightning strike at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, News 6 reported.

Bysanders performed CPR on Jenkins until first responders arrived and took him to a nearby hospital, where he died, according to the report.

Jenkins' father told WESH-TV in Orlando that his son had recently moved to Florida to participate in the Disney College Program, which is a paid internship that allows college students to work at Disney theme parks.

The hotel where Jenkins was found is located in the census-designated place of Celebration, near Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matthew," a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. "He had just begun his Disney College Program journey, and will always be remembered as part of our Disney community. Our hearts are with his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."

The medical examiner confirmed Jenkins died from electrocution by a lightning strike and ruled his death accidental.
