Firefighters Battle Church Fire In Troy: Officials

TROY, MI — Firefighters extinguished a church fire in Troy early Thursday morning, according to officials.

The fire happened at 3:15 a.m. Thursday at the Troy Church of Christ, located at 800 Trombley, according to officials.

Firefighters entered the building and were met with heavy smoke, direct fire and a partially collapsed ceiling, which severely compromised safety and hindered interior movement, according to officials.

Crews eventually extinguished the fire from the outside, according to officials.

Officials said the building was empty and there were no injuries in the fire.

Officials said the building sustained significant fire, smoke and structural damage. Fox 2 Detroit reported the building appears to be a total loss.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

"Our crews faced difficult and rapidly changing conditions upon arrival this morning," officials said in a statement. "While the structural damage to the church is significant, we are extremely thankful that the building was empty and no one was injured."
