From April 17 - 19, 2026, the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP) will hold a 3-day Plenary conference to assess the state of its work to unify and liberate the African Nation and to prepare its members and supporters for the final offensive towards victory in the anti-colonial struggle. This year’s Plenary is themed, “This Time ‘Til it’s Won! Power in Our Own Hands! It’s not just Trump, it’s the whole damn system!”

While freedom-loving people throughout the world are courageously putting their lives on the line in opposition to the genocidal frenzy of U.S. international and domestic military aggression, the APSP calls on freedom-loving people to go beyond protest and build the liberated economy to negate the colonial mode of production.

Chairman Omali describes the significance of the upcoming Plenary: “The African People’s Socialist Party International Plenary is the planning forum we use to deepen our organization, enhance our organizing and lead the African working class beyond spontaneous protest and social media militancy to the capture of actual contending dual power designed to negate the colonial domination of our people and the oppressed peoples of the world.”

The APSP’s April 17-19 Plenary will include presentations, workshops and training sessions on:

zAmya Theater Project hosts a screening of filmmaker Stephen Apkon’s documentary “There Is Another Way” at Minneapolis Central Library. The film tells the story of Combatants for Peace, a bi-national movement of Palestinians and Israelis, including former enemy combatants, who reject violence and work together toward justice and peace.
Set against the devastation and escalating violence following October 7 and the war in Gaza, the film asks what becomes possible when people refuse to surrender to hatred and injustice, even as their deepest beliefs are tested.
This free public event will introduce audiences to the work of Israeli activist, theater scholar, and Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner Dr. Chen Alon, whose six-month virtual residency with zAmya is centered on the company’s ongoing Locked In program. More info at zamyatheater.org/chen-alon.
The screening will be followed by a Q&amp;A with filmmaker Stephen Apkon, Combatants for Peace co-founder Sulaiman Khatib, and Dr. Chen Alon, who will join via Zoom.
Since its emergence in Latin America in the 1970s, Theatre of the Oppressed has evolved as a tool for collective analysis, dialogue, and social change. Dr. Alon has developed what he calls a “Polarized” Theatre of the Oppressed model, designed to build trust and understanding between groups positioned in tension or conflict.
The April 19 screening serves as an introduction to Dr. Alon’s body of work and to zAmya’s continued exploration of Theatre of the Oppressed through Locked In, a project co-created by zAmya and EqualHealth’s Campaign Against Racism (CAR), a global movement of health workers organizing to dismantle structural racism in healthcare.
Locked In centers the experiences of people facing homelessness and examines systemic bias in healthcare against people who are unhoused. What began as a single script, Locked In: A Theatrical Dialogue about Healthcare and Homelessness, has grown into a body of work that now includes two short scenes and a full-length play performed in the Twin Cities, Chicago, and at the national Theatre of the Oppressed conference.
Dr. Chen Alon is a theater activist, actor, and director who wrote his Ph.D. on the Palestinian-Israeli Polarized Model of Theatre of the Oppressed in the Theatre Department at Tel Aviv University. A Major in the Israeli army reserves, he co-founded Courage to Refuse, a movement of officers and soldiers who refused to serve in the occupied Palestinian territories, for which he was sentenced to prison. By 1900, Samuel L. Clemens (“Mark Twain”) was the most well-known American in the world. He wasn’t just an American, but as Twain said himself, “I am THE American.” Ernest Hemmingway once remarked, “…all American literature arises from one book: Huckleberry Finn.” But there were many more: Tom Sawyer, Roughing It, Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Innocents Abroad, Following the Equator, Puddin’head Wilson, The Gilded Age and hundreds of other books, pamphlets, magazine articles, speeches and lectures.
Since his first reading of Mark Twain, Don Shelby has collected the works of the famous author, read every biography written about him, as well as studying his letters, speeches and his autobiography published a century after his death.
In 1973, Don met Mr. Hal Holbrook who had won the Tony Award for his performance in “Mark Twain Tonight,” on Broadway. Don was fascinated by Holbrook for two reasons: Don began his interest in performance as a theatrical makeup artist and because Holbrook and Shelby revered the same author. Shelby was often invited backstage by Holbrook as he donned the famous Twain makeup.
In the late 1980s, Shelby began performing as Mark Twain, but creating a show distinct from Holbrook’s performances. Don has staged his presentation of Mark Twain based only on Twain’s actual words in books, articles and platform performances. He has performed his show in New Orleans, Louisiana, aboard the vaunted Delta Queen Steamboat and to nearly 10,000 theater goers here at home. Notably, he toured as Mark Twain with the VocalEssence Ensemble singers for two years in “River Songs.”
At this performance, Don will include passages of Holbrook’s performance in honor of his mentor’s passing at the age of 95 in 2021 with the expressed permission of the Mark Twain Foundation where Hal Holbrook’s original notes from Mark Twain Tonight are lodged and protected.
DON SHELBY&nbsp;(Mark Twain) is considered the most decorated local news anchor in the country with two George Foster Peabodys, the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, three National Emmys with the WCCO-TV I-Team and the Distinguished Service Award from the National Society of Professional Journalists, among hundreds of other honors. He anchored WCCO-TV’s newscasts for 32 of his 55-year career in journalism. But, like his predecessor, Dave Moore, his very first love was theater.
Upon his retirement from the news desk in 2011, Don appeared in the Lab Theater’s production of&nbsp;Rocky Horror, appearing with numerous Guthrie actors in a performance of&nbsp;8&nbsp;at the Varsity Theater. He was a featured actor in&nbsp;Safe at Home&nbsp;at the Mixed Blood Theatre, and he has performed more than 200 times, in character, as Mark Twain in shows at performing arts centers throughout the state, in New Orleans and even aboard the legendary Delta Queen Riverboat on the Mississippi River in St. Louis. Don was inducted to the Broadcast Hall of Fame, as well as the Silver and Gold Circles by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He is a Trustee of the Science Museum of Minnesota, as well as seven other boards ranging from climate change to racial healing. He is on the board of directors of VocalEssence. Don is the author of the book “The Season Never Ends” and has written the foreword to more than a dozen books. He has raised more than $100 million in charity donations. Over the past several years, Don was delighted to be paired with one of his dearest friends, Nancy Nelson, to perform in the Pulitzer-nominated production of&nbsp;Love Letters&nbsp;at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres.

During Black History Month, 100 Black Men of the Twin Cities and Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities Announce Partnership to Build the Next Generation of Black Leaders Minneapolis–St. Paul, MN — Feb. 10, 2026 — During Black History Month, 100 Black Men of the Twin Cities (100BMTC) and Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities (BBBSTC) announced a partnership to expand mentorship and leadership development for Black male youth across the Twin Cities. This partnership honors the legacy of Black leadership by increasing access to positive Black male role models and consistent developmental opportunities. BBBSTC currently has a waiting list of more than 600 youth, and due to high demand for male mentors, some young people wait more than two years for a match. In response, the organizations are mobilizing more Black men to serve as mentors while supporting youth through Jr. 100, a leadership initiative of 100BMTC that provides consistent engagement and exposure to Black leadership. “For more than sixty years, the 100 Black Men of America has affirmed that mentorship in the Black community is foundational,” said Kheph Rakhu, President of 100 Black Men of the Twin Cities. “Partnering with 100 Black Men Twin Cities reflects a shared commitment to showing up for Black youth with consistency and care,” said Pat Sukhum, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities. The partnership includes joint community events, coordinated storytelling, and the continued growth of the annual Black MENTors BBQ.
