Popular Twins Writer Leaves The Athletic After 7 Years
He said Twins coverage has been shrinking "almost everywhere" as he launches a new reader-supported site.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — One of Minnesota’s best-known Twins writers is going independent after seven years at The Athletic, pointing to a broader decline in coverage of the team.
Aaron Gleeman announced Monday that he has left The Athletic and relaunched AaronGleeman.com, where he plans to continue covering the Minnesota Twins with a reader-supported subscription model.
"Twins coverage has unfortunately been shrinking almost everywhere," Gleeman wrote.

Gleeman wrote that The Athletic wanted him to stay with the company, but in a different role that would have taken him away from Twins coverage.
"Any job that wants to pull me away from covering the Twins, and scale back their overall coverage of the team, ceases being my dream job," Gleeman wrote.

Gleeman said he will continue attending games, talking to Twins players and officials, and writing about the team throughout the year.
The new site will include Twins analysis, reporting, clubhouse notes, minor league coverage, prospect rankings, interviews, live chats, mailbags and his longtime "Link-O-Rama" feature.
The site will be supported by paid subscriptions, with plans listed at $8 per month or $75 per year.
Gleeman described the move as a return to his roots. He launched the original AaronGleeman.com in 2002 and has covered the Twins for more than 25 years.
He covered the Twins for The Athletic for seven years and is also known for co-hosting the "Gleeman and The Geek" podcast.
Gleeman said the relaunched site is meant to keep providing the kind of year-round Twins coverage he says has become harder to find elsewhere.
"That’s what I’m offering here," Gleeman wrote. "The same work, the same voice, the same access, the same analysis, the same reporting, the same jokes, and the same typos."
