Town Traditions: The Minneapolis Aquatennial
A favorite, long-standing tradition for Minneapolis residents is the Aquatennial festival.

MINNEAPOLIS — It may be hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner. And summer in the Twin Cities means outdoor community festivals.
A favorite, long-standing tradition for Minneapolis residents is the Aquatennial festival. The annual event along the shores of the Mississippi River and on the various lakes across the city has been going on since 1940.
The Minneapolis Aquatennial was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related state restrictions around large gatherings. But the event made a roaring back in 2021 and 2022.
