Las Vegas Work Zones and Construction Sites Prove to be Major Cause of Accidents, New Study Finds

With so much construction going on in the city, officials and citizens, alike are becoming increasingly concerned.

Las Vegas, NV - According to a recent study, work zones and construction sites in Las Vegas are responsible for a significant number of accidents, with accident rates 3.4 times higher than non-construction areas in Nevada. These findings highlight the need for increased safety measures in these high-growth development areas.

Car accidents in Las Vegas construction zones are also higher due to excessive speeding, abrupt lane changes, and distracted driving caused by rapidly changing traffic patterns. Narrow lanes, poor visibility, and merging bottlenecks, particularly on major arteries like the I-15/US-95 interchange, increase risks. Rear-end collisions are common due to these chaotic conditions.

As of late April 2026, Las Vegas is experiencing heavy traffic congestion driven by widespread road construction, including major projects on the I-15/215 beltway and near the Strip. Frequent accidents, particularly in construction zones and interchanges, are causing significant delays, with recent fatal crashes reported near Laughlin and on the I-15.

Driver injuries in construction zones are common, with approximately 80%–85% of work zone fatalities being motorists or passengers rather than workers.
"Major causes for personal injury include rear-end collisions, speeding, distracted driving, and narrow lanes, often resulting in serious injuries or death. Rear-end crashes, driven by unexpected braking and inadequate following distances, are the most frequent type of collision" states personal injury attorney Sam Ryan Heidari, owner of the Heidari Law Group in Las Vegas.

Car Accidents and Traffic Incidents

  • High-Risk Areas: Major interchanges, specifically I-15 and US-95, are seeing frequent multi-vehicle accidents due to complex merging and high traffic density.
  • Recent Activity: High incidence of accidents reported, including a fatal crash involving a pedestrian near Laughlin and a motorcyclist in the southwest valley.
  • Traffic Conditions: Heavy construction has exacerbated road rage and accidents, with ongoing police alerts for lane changes and delays

"Increasing safety measures in Las Vegas work zones is critical due to high traffic volume, frequent road construction, and the high rate of fatal, speed-related, and distracted driving incidents "states Heidari. "
