Manchester Firefighters Evacuate 16 People Due To Significant Gas Leak
Sidewalk Snowblower Sheared Off Gas Meter on Putnam Street, damaging a pipe, causing a gas leak. Crews were challenged by extreme cold.

MANCHESTER, NH - Firefighters, police, and AMR responded to a report of a sidewalk snowblower that struck a gas meter in front of 229 Putnam Street Saturday at 3:14 a.m.
The Meter struck sheared off a high-pressure two-inch gas main, creating a major leak against the building.
On arrival, they had high levels of gas in the buildings. Crews began evacuation while other firefighters set up a water supply and hose lines. Twelve adults and 4 children were evacuated and initially placed in fire apparatus and police cruisers due to extremely low temperatures.

A bus was requested from Manchester Transit Authority, before the bus accommodations could be made the Alpine Club on Putnam Street opened their doors and was used as a temporary shelter for the people evacuated.
Liberty Utilities was contacted requesting an emergency, and arrived at the scene at 4:12 a.m. At 4:43 a.m., the gas to the building was shut off.

The call was brought under control at 5:00 a.m. after Liberty Utilities shut off the building's gas, allowing repairs to the broken pipe.
Extreme cold, wind, and snow around the meter offered challenges to the crews on scene.
Engines 6,2,11,5 Trucks 1,6 Rescue 1 and Battalion Chief Plantier responded.
A press release from the Manchester Fire Department did not identify the owner of the sidewalk snowblower, but it is believed to be a unit operated by the Manchester Department of Public Works.
After repairs were made, the residents were able to return to their homes.
