Manchester Cellist Invited To Queen Elisabeth Competition Returns To MCMS For Rehearsal Friday
The Manchester Community Music School alumnus Roric Cunningham will return for a local rehearsal on April 24.

MANCHESTER, NH — Manchester Community Music School alumnus Roric Cunningham has been invited to compete in the 2026 Queen Elisabeth Competition and will return to the city this week for a rehearsal at the school.
According to MCMS, Cunningham is scheduled for a private rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the school’s recital hall. The school said the event will offer MCMS members a look at how Cunningham is preparing for the international competition.
Cunningham began his musical training at the school, where he studied cello with faculty member Harel Gietheim. According to the school, scholarships and financial assistance enabled him to pursue music education there, and he later studied at The Juilliard School. Cunningham joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra at 23 and was one of the youngest musicians to do so, the school said.

According to MCMS, 66 cellists were selected for the first public round of the 2026 cello edition of the competition after a preselection process that narrowed the field from about 185 applicants ages 18 to 30. The school said the competition continues through multiple rounds and ends with 12 finalists performing with an orchestra.
MCMS said Cunningham’s return reflects the school’s continued support for former students after their formal study ends. The school said he continues to use its spaces and mentorship as part of his artistic development.
According to MCMS, the April 24 rehearsal is open to supporters of the school, and community members are encouraged to attend. MCMS, which says it has served students for more than 40 years, offers lessons, ensembles, community programs and a music therapy program in Manchester.
