From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Portsmouth.

Sports run deep in Portsmouth, and Portsmouth High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Clipper uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Portsmouth High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.
1. Christina Campos Rainey – Multi-Sport All-State Honoree
Rainey is regarded as one of the most accomplished multi-sport athletes in Portsmouth High School history. A 1994 graduate, excelling in soccer, basketball and softball, earning multiple first-team all-state and all-division honors during her career. Known for her competitiveness, leadership and athletic versatility, she remains a standout figure in Clippers athletics and is recognized in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. 2. Brian Stone – University of New Haven Athletics Hall of Fame
Stone is one of the top baseball players to come out of Portsmouth High School. A dominant pitcher during his time with the Clippers, he went on to play at the University of New Haven. He spent some time playing in the minors before finishing his playing career. Stone has been inducted into his University’s Hall of Fame as well as his high school’s. 3. Thor Griffith – NFL Player (Seattle Seahawks)
The most recent member of this list is a 2020 graduate. Griffith was a standout defensive lineman for the Clippers. A standout at Harvard University for three seasons, earning several first-team accolades, Griffith completed his collegiate career at the University of Louisville. 4. Jennifer Flad Henningsen – Portsmouth Athletics Hall of Fame
Henningsen is one of the most versatile athletes in Portsmouth High School history. Earning varsity letters in five different sports: cross country, soccer, gymnastics, basketball and softball, as well as first-team All Eastern Division in softball. 5. Timothy Kehoe – Multi-Sport Standout, Portsmouth Athletics Hall of Fame
Kehoe is one of the most well-rounded athletes in Portsmouth High School history. A three-sport standout in cross country, track and basketball, earning multiple All-State and All-Division honors during his career. Kehoe set school records and helped raise the standard of excellence for Clippers athletics.
