Rhode Island’s Bishop Hendricken High School Again Wins NH’s Capital City Classic Wrestling Tournament
Wrestlers from 39 high schools in Mass., NH, RI, and Vermont participated in about 700 bouts during the prestigious Concord event Saturday.
CONCORD, NH — Students from 39 high schools in three states competed in the prestigious 35th annual Capital City Classic Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
The event, which is also the biggest fundraiser for the Concord High School Crimson Tide wrestling team program, featured the highest number of schools participating in its history. First held in 1991, the Capital City Classic was started by Jim Kaufman, the head coach of the Crimson Tide at the time, which had only had a wrestling team for about four years. The event has grown into one of the toughest and most efficient one-day tournaments in New England.
Wrestlers battled in nearly 700 bouts. The wrestling started at 8 a.m. on eight mats and lasted until 5 p.m. — slightly longer than normal due to more teams competing this year. The event also raised more than $12,000 for the school’s wrestling program.
