Damaging Winds, Flash Flooding Expected Across NJ

NEW JERSEY— Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and downpours are expected for parts of New Jersey on Tuesday, with the greatest risk coming during the afternoon and evening hours, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms are expected to develop mainly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, with additional rounds of rain and thunderstorms possible overnight.

The latest forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Storms could linger into Tuesday night, when the chance of precipitation rises to 50 percent.

Skies will turn mostly cloudy, with temperatures falling to around 68 degrees.

Rainfall totals generally could range from a tenth to a quarter of an inch.

Central and southern New Jersey are under a marginal risk, Level 1 of 5, for severe weather Tuesday.

The primary severe-weather threat is damaging wind gusts, although isolated stronger storms could also produce torrential rain and flash flooding.

Tuesday will remain hot and humid, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s to mid-90s across parts of the state. Humidity could make it feel like the upper 90s to around 100 degrees.

Forecasters warn that heavy rain could continue into Wednesday, including during the morning commute.

Additional rounds of thunderstorms are expected through Wednesday night and into Thursday as a stalled front remains near the I-78 and I-80 corridors.

Thursday could again bring strong to severe thunderstorms as a cold front pushes through the region.
