Jersey Shore Beach Report: A Break From The Rain

After the rain, the sun is going to shine, and that seems to be the expectation for most of this weekend at the Jersey Shore's beaches.

Here is a look from Patch at the beach forecast for the first weekend of August, including the latest on rip currents and jellyfish sightings and when the high tides might interfere with your spot on the beach.

THE FORECAST
From the National Weather Service

Friday: Mostly sunny with a high near 80. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. At night there will be some clouds and a low around 71.

Saturday: Sunshine continues Saturday with a high at the beach in the low 80s. Light winds during the day becoming southerly and 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Mostly cloudy overnight with a low around 73 degrees.

Sunday: Partly sunny with a high near 80. South wind 10 to 15 mph. The weather is expected to shift later in the day with a chance of showers in the evening and a thunderstorm possible overnight. Chance of rain is 70 percent. Low around 73 degrees.

Monday-Thursday: Showers are anticipated for the start of the week, with a 40 percent chance of rain on Monday and 30 percent on Tuesday before we get sunshine later in the week. Highs in the low 80s and overnight lows in the low 70s.

JELLYFISH: Sea nettles continue to be thick in the back bays and lagoons. There have been occasional washups on the ocean beaches of jellyfish including lion's mane jellies. The New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group has regular posts about what people are seeing and encountering in local waters.

A reminder for your beach kit or your home: Keep white vinegar on hand to treat jellyfish stings. Paul Bologna, the jellyfish expert and director of the marine biology program at Montclair State University, offers these tips: Apply white vinegar immediately. This stops any stinging cells that have not fired in the tentacles. Rinse the sting area with the salt water you are in to wash away tentacles. "Do not use bottled water to rinse as osmotic shock will cause stinging cells left behind to fire and continue to sting," he says. Wipe the area clean with a clean towel or cloth. Benadryl or calamine lotion can help with itching, and over-the-counter pain medicines can be used for pain from the stings depending on the severity.
