Jersey Shore Beach Report: Gotta Wear Shades

Craving a beach day? This might be a good time to take one.

Sunshine is in store for most of the weekend at the Jersey Shore, which should make for good days at the beach.

Here is a look from Patch at the beach forecast for the weekend of Aug. 14-16, including the latest on rip currents and jellyfish sightings and when the high tides might interfere with your spot on the beach.

THE FORECAST
From the National Weather Service

Friday: Mostly sunny with a high near 83. North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Mostly clear overnight with a low around 74. South wind around 5 mph becoming north after midnight.

Saturday: Plenty of sunshine is in store with comfortable highs around 80 degrees and a northeast wind around 10 mph. Some clouds overnight and a low of 73 with a light south wind of 5 mph.

Sunday: Partly sunny with a 40 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. and breezy with winds up to 20 mph. At night the chance of showers is 90 percent with thunderstorms possible after 8 p.m. Low around 74 degrees.

Monday-Thursday: Sunshine is expected through Thursday, but there is a chance of rain in forecast for Thursday. Highs in the mid-80s all week with overnight lows in the low 70s.

JELLYFISH: The back bays continue to see significant numbers of jellyfish, according to the New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group. The ocean temperatures remain chilly enough that jellyfish have not been a problem.

As a reminder, white vinegar and calamine lotion are good to have in your beach kit to treat jellyfish stings. Paul Bologna, the jellyfish expert and director of the marine biology program at Montclair State University, offers these tips: Apply white vinegar immediately. This stops any stinging cells that have not fired in the tentacles. Rinse the sting area with the salt water you are in to wash away tentacles. "Do not use bottled water to rinse as osmotic shock will cause stinging cells left behind to fire and continue to sting," he says. Wipe the area clean with a clean towel or cloth. Benadryl or calamine lotion can help with itching, and over-the-counter pain medicines can be used for pain from the stings depending on the severity.
