Child Airlifted In E-Bike Crash In Manahawkin: Police

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — A 13-year-old Manahawkin boy was airlifted to the hospital following an e-bike crash Tuesday night, police said.

At about 8 p.m. Tuesday, a car was trying to turn left from Lighthouse Drive onto Buccaneer Lane when an e-bike driving on the shoulder of Lighthouse Drive crashed into the car's passenger side, police said.

The 13-year-old boy's face and head were injured, police said. He was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.

The car's driver, a 24-year-old Manahawkin man, was uninjured.

According to police, the e-bike was being driven at night without a functioning headlight or taillight. The e-bike was also unregistered and uninsured, police said. Additionally, the teen was not wearing properly approved DOT-compliant helmet.

The crash remains under investigation by the Stafford Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit. Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have information regarding the incident is asked to contact Traffic Safety Officer Barnett at (609) 597-1189, ext. 8490.

Requirements involving age, licensing, registration, insurance, helmets, lighting, reflectors, and lawful operation are important safety measures intended to increase rider visibility and reduce the risk of crashes and serious injuries.

Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to understand the classification and legal requirements of any e-bike their child operates and to ensure that the child is legally permitted and properly equipped to ride it. This is especially important when e-bikes are operated during evening or nighttime hours.

Following applicable e-bike laws, using required lighting and reflective equipment, wearing an approved helmet, and operating responsibly can significantly improve rider safety and help prevent avoidable crashes and injuries.
