BELLEVILLE, NJ — A Belleville police officer’s compassion and specialized medical training recently earned him a nod as the BPD’s latest “Officer of the Month.”

Here’s what earned Thomas Collins the April 2026 honors, according to the Belleville Police Department:

“Officer Thomas Collins is a highly dedicated and proactive officer whose commitment to public safety and community engagement consistently stands out. With specialized training as an EMT-B, SWAT Medic, licensed medical instructor, and New Jersey Police Training Commission instructor, he brings exceptional skill and leadership to the department.

“Officer Collins is nominated for his compassionate handling of a vulnerable incident involving a senior citizen who wandered from home. During the incident, Officer Collins was able to build a strong rapport with the family and recommended a GPS tracking solution, helping prevent future incidents. His professionalism earned the family’s trust, leading them to specifically reach out and request him for continued assistance.

“He also enhanced departmental readiness by assembling fully equipped medical bags for patrol, including AEDs and Narcan kits, and plays an active role in training fellow officers in lifesaving programs such as CPR/AED and Stop the Bleed. His community outreach efforts further reflect his dedication to service.
