'No Drone Zones' Will Accompany FIFA World Cup, Essex County Prosecutor Says

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Don’t fly those drones when the World Cup comes to New Jersey. That’s the reminder from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office in advance of the massively popular soccer series.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the final taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on July 19.

But when the games come to North Jersey, it’s a good move to leave the drones at home, authorities say.

According to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, all FIFA World Cup 2026 match venues and fan-related events will be designated as strict No Drone Zones.

“Unauthorized drone use near stadiums is illegal and poses serious safety risks,” prosecutors said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will enforce temporary flight restrictions during all matches and fan festivals. Violators face significant penalties, including fines up to $100,000, criminal charges, possible imprisonment and confiscation of their drone, prosecutors noted.

“Public safety is our top priority,” Stephens said. “We urge everyone to follow the law and leave the drones at home. If you cannot attend the matches in person, please enjoy the events safely at home.”
