‘Deteriorating’ Pond In Bloomfield Is Being Restored: Here’s The Plan
Major restoration work is scheduled to begin this week at Halcyon Pond.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — A major restoration project at Halcyon Pond is scheduled to start in Bloomfield this week.
The Township of Bloomfield recently announced that it is preparing to move forward with a comprehensive restoration of Halcyon Pond on Wednesday. The work is being done to address longstanding concerns about the pond’s condition.
Here’s the problem, the township said:

“Halcyon Pond, a man-made water feature, has experienced significant deterioration over time, including nearly two feet of sediment buildup and damage to its liner and structural components. These issues have contributed to poor water quality and reduced depth, impacting both the pond’s ecosystem and its overall condition.”
The restoration project is being divided into four phases, the first of which is expected to begin on Oct. 7:

Phase 1 (Removal of Non-Native Wildlife) – “In accordance with guidance from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the township will first address non-native species currently inhabiting the pond, including goldfish and koi. State regulations prohibit the introduction of fish or turtles into waterways without proper permitting, as these species can disrupt local ecosystems. As a result, goldfish and koi will be humanely removed as required by state guidelines. Any turtles identified will be safely relocated in compliance with regulations.”
Phase 2 (Pond Drawdown and Sediment Removal) – “Following wildlife removal, the pond will be drained to allow crews full access. Accumulated sediment will then be removed, restoring the pond’s intended depth and improving water quality.”
Phase 3 (Structural and Infrastructure Repairs) – “Once dredging is complete, the township will repair and reinforce key infrastructure, including the pond liner, retaining walls, electrical components, and filtration system to ensure reliable long-term operation.”
Phase 4 (Refill and Ecological Restoration) – “After repairs and final approvals, the pond will be refilled. The township will then introduce appropriate, permitted fish species and install aquatic vegetation to support a balanced and sustainable ecosystem.”
The project will be overseen by the township’s Department of Public Works in coordination with Solitude Lake Management.
“This project has been thoughtfully planned and coordinated through the necessary environmental review process, and we’re grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this point,” acting DPW director Samantha DePalma said.
“We look forward to getting this work underway and restoring the pond for the community,” DePalma added.
Township officials have previously called the local pond a “hidden gem” of Bloomfield.
“The walking path is perfect for a daily stroll and offers a peaceful setting to enjoy nature,” the public works department suggested last February.
