Bridgewater-Raritan High School Stages 'Little Shop of Horrors' To Applause

Audience members and school staff praised the student production after four performances in April.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s Theatre Arts production of "Little Shop of Horrors" drew strong praise from audience members after a four-show run in the school’s newly renovated auditorium.

The musical was performed over three days, from Thursday, April 16, through Saturday, April 18, before what was described as a robust and energized crowd.

According to Bridgewater-Raritan High School Theatre Arts, "Little Shop of Horrors" is set in a struggling flower shop on Skid Row and follows Seymour Krelborn, an employee who finds fame and fortune after nurturing a plant he names Audrey II.

As the plant grows, Seymour faces the consequences of feeding it while pursuing success and love. The show blends humor with rock, doo-wop, R&B-inspired music and science fiction horror, according to the program description.

Audience reaction was enthusiastic, including from former district arts supervisor Dr. Laura Bassett, who is now principal of Eisenhower Intermediate School.

"Little Shop of Horrors was nothing short of outstanding. The incredible sets, costumes, and lighting design brought us right into the world of Skid Row, and each version of Audrey II was a masterpiece," Bassett stated. "It was thrilling to watch our talented Bridgewater-Raritan High School students embody such authentic, well-crafted characters."

Bassett also said, "Every time the full ensemble was on stage, their power vocals and energy filled the theater–you could feel the packed house respond with enthusiasm. This was a truly memorable performance and a testament to the talent and dedication of everyone involved."

Tracy Nerger, an English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School, said, "The show was amazing. The set was top-notch, and the leads were fantastic and perfectly cast. I have seen Little Shop of Horrors many times Off-Broadway, and this Bridgewater-Raritan High School production was the best I have seen."

Other school community members also praised the production.

"Looks and sounds like a Broadway production. Amazing that these are high school students," said Theodora Lambert, principal’s secretary at Hamilton Primary School.

Board of Education member Barry Walker said, "It was a fantastic show," and added, "Students' performances showcased their talents, skills, and passion to a very enthusiastic audience of classmates, family, and friends."

Three high school staff members also highlighted the cast and backstage team.

Kristin Bonczek, a physical education and health teacher, said student crews handling lights, sound, stage crew, stage hands and puppets helped the show "run with abundant success!"

She added, "Bridgewater-Raritan School’s rendition of Little Shop of Horrors was the most impressive high school production I have ever seen."
