BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School students on the summer robotics team known as the BunbleBeez reached the finals of the international Zero Robotics Middle School Competition and finished as the 4th-place runner-up on Aug. 7.

The team included Shubham Chouhan, Anitej Das, Aahan Behera, Kenisha Patel, Armaan Chopra and Srish Sankaran.

The Zero Robotics Middle School Program is an international computer programming competition developed through a collaboration involving MIT and NASA.

Students design, program and test autonomous robots that simulate free-flying satellites used in space.

Teams write and refine code to control SPHERES or Astrobee robots, which operate aboard the International Space Station, while working on challenges tied to navigation, resource management, positioning and strategy in a simulated microgravity environment.

The BunbleBeez is a summer robotics team led virtually by a parent coach.

The team had participated in the 2025 season and returned in 2026.

For five weeks during the summer, the students met almost every day in person and virtually to work on programming, testing, problem-solving and strategy.

As the competition moved forward, the BunbleBeez teamed up with two robotics teams based in Texas to form Alliance #9, officially named Honeycomb.

The alliance held a mini intramural competition to test strategies and code before the final round. The winning code chosen for the alliance’s final submission came from the BunbleBeez team.

The finale took place Aug. 7.

Because of summer scheduling conflicts, the Bridgewater-Raritan students did not travel to the MIT campus in Cambridge to watch in person. Instead, they watched the live broadcast remotely as their code was tested in the simulated arena.

By the end of the broadcast, Alliance #9 Honeycomb was declared the 4th-place runner-up.

A few weeks later, the team received its official runner-up trophy in September.
