Rebecca Bennett Claims Democrat Nomination For NJ-7 Primary Election: AP

One Republican and four Democrats filed to run in the contested 2026 Primary Election for the 7th Congressional District.

DISTRICT 7, NJ — Rebecca Bennett has been named the winner of the Democratic ticket in the NJ 7th Congressional District primary election, according to AP News.

"I got into this race 16 months ago to fight for the version of the country we are going to leave for my daughters and our next generation, and because Washington is failing our communities,"Bennett said. "Tonight, I’m honored to be the Democratic nominee to flip this critical seat, and I could not be more grateful for the coalition we have built to win this primary and put us in the best position to win in November. But the real work starts now."

While the Republican race was uncontested, the Democratic race was contested with four candidates vying for one spot.

Here are the unofficial results for the District 7 Congressional race(*denotes incumbent), according to AP News(87 percent votes counted):

7th Congressional District

  • Tom Kean Jr.* - Republican - Uncontested
  • Tina Shah - Democrat - 10,748
  • Michael Roth - Democrat - 8,482
  • Brian Varela - Democrat - 10,143
  • Rebecca Bennett - Democrat - 24,673

Bennett will now face off against Republican incumbent Kean Jr. in the general election.

Kean Jr. put out a statement on Tuesday addressing his absence from the White House for the past few months.

"I am more energized than ever to keep fighting for the people of New Jersey's 7th District. Right now I am focused on my recovery and, under the advice of healthcare professionals, will transition from virtual work to in person work within a matter of weeks," said Kean Jr.

"At that time, I will be completely transparent as to the nature of my medical condition. Once again, I appreciate all of the prayers and patience from my constituents and colleagues. I understand the need for transparency on this matter, and I look forward to sharing my experience with the public," said Kean.

The New Jersey general election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
