'International Overdose Awareness Day' Puts Victims, Stigma-Free Approach On Display At Camden County Vigil

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Camden County Board of Commissioners joined forces with a host of other local advocates and organizations in support of "International Overdose Awareness Day" on Monday.

"I think the most important message is that no one should have to face addiction, grief, or recovery alone," Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. shared with Patch. "Every program and resource represents an opportunity to save a life or help a family find support."

Along with the Camden County Addiction Awareness Task Force, healthcare providers, and law enforcement, locals gathered at the Remembrance and Hope Memorial at Timber Creek Park for a vigil.

The annual "International Overdose Awareness Day" events across the globe showcase the fight against addiction, honoring the lives of those who died without any judgement, and provide comfort to help support the families that were left behind.

Over the last decade, the Board of Commissioners has worked to secure increased access to naloxone, treatment programs, mobile treatment services, and other resources for those living with substance use disorder and their families.

"We cannot bring back those we have lost, but we can honor their lives by raising awareness, removing the stigma, and helping other families from experiencing the same loss," added Cappelli.
