Rabid Bat Found In South Jersey

CHERRY HILL, NJ — A bat found in Cherry Hill was confirmed to have rabies, the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services said.

The bat was found in a home on Thursday and safely removed by an independent animal contractor.

On Monday, officials were notified by the state Public Health & Environmental Laboratories that the animal was rabid.

Four people and two dogs may have been exposed, according to health officials.

Both dogs were vaccinated and had the rabies booster. They will be under confinement and observation for four months.

Residents are reminded to reduce the risk that animals have to contract rabies by keeping vaccinations current, supervising animals while outdoors, and getting veterinary assistance immediately if a bite should occur.

Wild animals, such as raccoons, skunks, and foxes, should not be approached at a close distance.

Be aware of uncovered garbage cans and litter, and do not adopt wild animals.

Animal control should be called immediately for help.
